DescriptionA painting of the sailing frigate, USS ESSEX. It depicts a side view of the three-masted ship with sails furled and an American flag flying from the stern. A small type of row boat is in the foreground, and the port of Canton, China is seen in the background.
The painting is framed in an oval 1 3/8" gilt wood frame with beaded inner edge. The title is on a small metal plaque mounted on the lower section of the frame: U.S. Man-of-War "Essex". A handwritten note in ink, once adhered on the reverse, reads: The US Man-of-War Essex (Dr. Rush - Asst. Surgeon U S Navy.) off Canton, China U.S. Consulate in distance Painted in China.
Label TextThe USS ESSEX (1799) was launched on September 30, 1799. It was the first U.S. Man-of-War to round the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa in 1800.The painting is framed in an oval 1 3/8" gilt wood frame with beaded inner edge.
