DescriptionA color lithograph depicting the action between the ships HMS SERAPIS and USS BONHOMME RICHARD on September 23, 1779 off the east coast of England. The nighttime scene depicts the two ships locked in battle with the British ship SERAPIS on the left and the American ship BONHOMME RICHARD - rocked by a massive explosion - on the right. The artist's name is in the lower left corner of the image: WORDEN / WOOD. The title of the scene is printed below the image: The Revolution = Bonhomme Richard and Serapis. Printed below the image in the lower right corner is "© A. R." below which "1779" has been written in pencil.
