DescriptionA painting of the Navy's Atlantic and Pacific fleets on the Hudson River in New York City in 1934. The evening scene depicts a promenande, on the right, that runs along the river on the left. New York City buildings can be seen at the very right of the painting. Couples and individuals are shown walking and sitting along the length of the promenande, while in the river, naval ships are projecting their searchlights into the sky, creating a crisscross of beams. The painting is signed and dated by the artist, in lower left: Carl W. Brandien / 1934.

A note on the reverse of the painting reads: The Stars and Stripes, N.Y. City, 1934, Atlantic and Pacific fleets. Evening of the day President Roosevelt reviewed the fleets sailing into New York Harbor and the Hudson River.

The painting is framed in a 3" gold and aqua frame with a crackled finish. An adhesive sticker on the reverse of the frame has the number: C-4-1.
Label TextThis painting was sketched by the artist, Carl Brandein, the evening of May 31, 1934, the day that President Roosevelt reviewed the Navy Fleet in New York City.

The completed painting was purchased from the artist by the Rockland County [New York] Democratic Committee and presented to Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937. It was at one time on display in the Gift Room of the White House during FDR's presidency.
