DescriptionAn embroidered Chinese overgarment worn by Eleanor Roosevelt. The long, front closure coat with side slits is made of reddish-orange silk with black, light gold, and cream-colored trim and has multicolored embroidered flowers and butterflies throughout. The interior of the coat is lined with green silk. The coat has three brass button and loop closures.
Label TextEleanor Roosevelt owned and enjoyed wearing several beautifully embroidered Chinese coats including this one which was worn frequently by her as an evening coat. A May 22, 1953 photo of Eleanor Roosevelt and Marian Anderson in Japan shows Mrs. Roosevelt wearing this coat.
