Physical DescriptionA small, cream-colored Wedgwood queen's ware head and shoulders bust of Franklin D. Roosevelt. It shows him wearing a suit jacket, shirt, and tie. The artist's inscribed signature is faintly visible on the reverse of the bust. On the underside of the base is a circular maker's mark stamped in green: WEDGWOOD / OF ETRURIA & BARLASTON / MADE IN ENGLAND. Also on the underside of the base is an impressed maker's mark: WEDGWOOD.
Historical NoteThis Wedgwood bust of Franklin Roosevelt was designed by Arnold Machin and is one of only twenty-four that were made. Franklin Roosevelt loomed large in American popular culture. Elected to four terms as America’s president, he became a familiar presence on the radio and in newspapers, magazines, and newsreels. Inevitably, his well-known likeness appeared on products such as this bust.
