Physical DescriptionA three-masted model of the New Bedford whaling barque (bark), JOSEPHINE. The wooden ship has the upper part of the hull painted black with a white stripe and has oxidized copper sheathing on the lower part. There is elaborate rigging, no sails, and a somewhat detailed deck layout that includes seven lifeboats. An American flag is attached to the rigging on the stern. The ship's name is found on either side of the bow, and on the end of the stern is: JOSEPHINE NEW BEDFORD. The model is rests on a pair of cradle stands in the shape of dolphins which are, in turn, attached to a green-stained wood base.
Historical NoteThis model was presented to President Roosevelt by the maker, Arthur B. Sherman, of New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1933. Sherman was a classmate of FDR at Harvard College. At one time, FDR displayed this model on the fireplace mantle in the White House Oval Study.
