Physical DescriptionAn original watercolor design depicting four scenes from the history of Mount Vernon, New York. From left to right: Puritan settlers with American Indians, possibly members of the Siwanoy Nation; a family of early settlers; a family with a servant and a boy on the steps of a mansion; and students and a teacher with a large structure in the background. It is covered by a plastic film on which the artist has inscribed in the lower right: With deepest gratitude to President F.D. Roosevelt Louise Brann May, 1935.
Historical NoteThis study is for a mural for the auditorium of the Charles E. Nichols Junior High School in Mount Vernon, New York. The study was submitted to the Civil Works Administration (CWA), which rejected the design. Brann’s subsequent study (see MO 1975.53.2) was accepted. Ultimately, artist Louise Brann created four mural panels for the auditorium.
