Physical DescriptionA portrait of Sara Delano Roosevelt, showing a head and bust view. With a red background, the full-faced view shows the subject in a pensive mood with her right hand raised to her jaw line. She is wearing a black dress, black shawl, pearls, a brooch, a gold bracelet, and a ruby ring. The artist's signature is in the lower right: CHANDOR / 1940.

The painting is framed in an ornate hand-carved 5" gilded wood and plaster frame. A number tag on the reverse reads: 143. Burned into the reverse bottom and upper right of the frame is the framer's information: M. GRIEVE CO / HAND CARVED / NEW YORK & LONDON.
Historical NoteFDR’s mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, commissioned this portrait of herself by Douglas Chandor (1897-1953) expressly for FDR's Study in the new Roosevelt Library. It is on display in FDR'S PRIVATE STUDY in the Permanent Exhibit.
