Physical DescriptionA hand-colored lithograph showing four ships – Brazilian, British, and American – in a harbor off Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Three of the ships are sailing ships and one is a small paddle steamer. The Rio de Janeiro coastline is visible in the distant background. The artist’s facsimile signature is in the lower left corner of image: Alf. Martinet. The names of the ships are printed below the image and are (from left to right): Sete de Abril [ship not shown], Armaçao, Nitherohy, H.M.S. Alfred, and U.St.S Congress. Also printed below the image is the artist, printer, and publisher information: [lower left] G. Leuzinger Editor, Rua do Ouvidor No. 36. / [lower right] Martinet . Lith / Lith . Heaton e Rensburg Rio de Janeiro.

The print is glazed and framed in a ¾" black wood frame with gold inner trim.
Historical NoteFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong collector of prints, engravings, and paintings illustrating the history of the United States Navy. This lithograph, which includes a view of the U.S. Navy frigate, USS CONGRESS, may have been purchased by FDR at the Old Print Shop in 1918.
