Physical DescriptionAn aluminum crooked neck cane with FDR's initials on the handle. There is a slot near the handle to accommodate the insertion of coins, turning the cane into a coin bank.

Historical NoteIn 1938, President Roosevelt created the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (which became known as the March of Dimes) to support the polio rehabilitation center he had established at Warm Springs, Georgia and aid polio victims around the nation. The Foundation urged Americans to send their loose change to the President in a “march of dimes.” Cane banks like this one were used to collect dimes for the Foundation. This cane is on display in THE MARCH OF DIMES AND FDR exhibit in the Museum’s FOUNDATIONS OF A PUBLIC LIFE gallery.
