Physical DescriptionAn unused cover with a multi-colored World War II patriotic cachet designed, copyrighted, and published by Jacques Minkus, New York, NY, 1942. The illustrated cachet consists of a circular, sepia image of the head of Abraham Lincoln with a red, white, and blue striped banner running over and behind it. Printed on the white stripe of the banner is blue text that reads: TODAY • • MORE THAN EVER. Printed beneath the portrait is blue text that reads: AND THAT GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, / BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, SHALL / NOT PERISH FROM THE EARTH. / FROM LINCOLN'S GETTYSBURG ADDRESS.
Historical NoteThis envelope is one in a group of twenty covers (MO 1982.34.13-32) with World War II patriotic cachets designed and published by Jacques Minkus. A promotor of philately, Jacques Minkus opened stamp counters in various department stores throughout the country. Not only did the counters sell stamps, they also carried cacheted covers and albums designed by Minkus, as well as stamp catalogues published by him.
