Physical DescriptionA sheet of paper with several original ink and pencil sketches of military guards at the U.S. Treasury. On the upper half of the sheet is a partially completed drawing of four men seated on or next to a cot on which they are playing poker. On the lower half of the sheet are a series of figure studies, in various stages of completion, of men in seated positions. The artwork sheet is initialed by the artist near the bottom: M.J.

On the reverse of the sheet is a rough pencil sketch of the sleeping quarters for the guards.

The sheet is mounted to a window mat on the front of which is adhered a typed descriptive label that reads: GUARD DUTY AT U. S. TREASURY / "POKER ON PAY DAY" / by / MITCHELL JAMIESON, WASHINGTON, D. C. / COMMISSIONED BY THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY / HONORABLE HENRY MORGENTHAU, JR.
Historical NoteThis sheet of sketches is one in a series of nine studies (MO 1991.2.1-9) depicting guard duty at the U.S. Treasury. The studies, done by artist Mitchell Jamieson, were commissioned by U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr.
