Physical DescriptionAn electric mantle clock, #115, in the form of a ship's wheel with the figure of FDR standing to the right with his hands on the wheel. Raised lettering at the base of the ship's wheel and on the base of the clock reads: ROOSEVELT / AT THE WHEEL FOR A NEW DEAL. The maker's information is on the bottom of the clock's face and on the reverse of the object. There is no electric cord.
Historical NoteFranklin Roosevelt loomed large in American popular culture. Elected to four terms as America’s president, he became a familiar presence on the radio and in newspapers, magazines, and newsreels. Inevitably, his well-known likeness appeared on products such as this clock. It is on display in the ROOSEVELT IN POP CULTURE exhibit in the Museum’s NEW DEAL gallery.
