Physical DescriptionA black and white line engraving portrait of John Paul Jones, commander of the USS BONHOMME RICHARD, boarding the HMS SERAPIS on September 23, 1779 off the coast of England. The engraving is done from a drawing by C. J. Notté and is titled below the image: John Paul Jones. It features Jones standing on the deck of the SERAPIS, while smoke and damaged portions of the ship are visible around him. In Jones' right hand he is holding a sword, and his left hand is reaching for one of the pistols at his waist. Centered below the image is a paragraph in French describing the battle. Printed below the lower left corner of the image: Dessiné par C. J. Notté. Printed below the lower right corner of the image: Gravé par Carl Guttenberg.Historical NoteFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong collector of prints, engravings, and paintings illustrating the history of the United States Navy. John Paul Jones (1747-1792) was one of his favorite naval heroes.
