Physical DescriptionAn original ink and watercolor sketch of military guards at the U.S. Treasury. The sketch depicts a room (presumably in the basement of the Treasury building) with a vaulted ceiling, block walls, a window, and a door. Two rows of cots - one row along each wall - are arranged in the room and on each cot a soldier, in full or partial uniform, is relaxing or sleeping. In the center of the room is a wooden A-frame gun rack that holds rifles, and a wooden bar on which clothes are hanging. A large shelving unit is in the back right corner of the room. The artwork sheet is signed by the artist along the bottom edge: Mitchell Jamieson.

The reverse of the sheet is blank except for a pencil notation regarding the image on the front: No. 8 sleeping quarters no. 2.

The sheet is mounted to a window mat on the front of which is adhered a typed descriptive label that reads: GUARD DUTY AT U. S. TREASURY / "SLEEPING QUARTERS - NO. 2" / by / MITCHELL JAMIESON, WASHINGTON, D. C. / COMMISSIONED BY THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY / HONORABLE HENRY MORGENTHAU, JR.
Historical NoteThis watercolor sketch is one in a series of nine studies (MO 1991.2.1-9) depicting guard duty at the U.S. Treasury. The studies, done by artist Mitchell Jamieson, were commissioned by U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr.
