Physical DescriptionA tan-colored stamp cover from Poland hand addressed in ink to President Roosevelt. Adhered in the upper right and upper left of the envelope are six Polish stamps: one 1935-1936 green 10g "Eye of the Sea" postage stamp (Scott 295); three 1935-1936 blue-green 15g M.S. PILSUDSKI postage stamps (Scott 296); one 1936 blue 55g Raczynski Library in Poznan postage stamp (Scott 302); and one 1936 brown 1z Cathedral at Wilno postage stamp (Scott 303). The envelope is postmarked Czortków, Poland, April 24, 1937 and has a black ink Czortków registration stamp.

On the reverse of the envelope is the hand written Polish return address. Also on the reverse is another postmark for Czortków, Poland, April 24, 1937, as well as two postmarks for New York, NY, May 3, 1937, and two postmarks for Washington, DC, May 4, 1937. A black ink stamped message reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUTHENTICATED BY H. R. HARMER INC., N. Y. The circled number "R171" is written in pencil in the lower right corner, and the number "DCW-3" is written in pencil further up.
Historical NoteFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.

After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
