OBVERSE: Text reads: FRACTIONAL CURRENCY. / UNITED STATES / FIFTY / CENTS / 50 / RECEIVABLE FOR ALL UNITED STATES STAMPS. On the left side is an engraved portrait of Edwin Stanton, United States Secretary of War from 1862 to1868. Along the bottom of the note are the facsimile signatures of Register of the Treasury John Allison and Treasurer of the United States Francis Elias Spinner.

REVERSE: Text reads: THIS NOTE / IS EXCHANGEABLE FOR / UNITED STATES NOTES / by the Assᵗ Treasurers & designated Depositories / of the / UNITED STATES / in the sums not less than / THREE DOLLARS. / Receivable in payment of all dues to the / UNITED STATES / less than / FIVE DOLLARS / Except Customs / 50 CENTS.
