Historical NoteThe Republicans based this campaign slogan on a comment FDR allegedly made during the selection process for his vice presidential running mate. The President had supposedly asked party leaders to “clear it with Sidney”—meaning Sidney Hillman, the powerful leader of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) Political Action Committee (PAC).
