Physical DescriptionA light yellow-brown glazed ceramic mug with handle. The mug simulates a beer barrel. On one side is the raised profile image of Franklin D. Roosevelt within a shield with raised text above and below the profile: THE / NEW DEAL. There is no maker’s mark. A piece of tape is adhered to the underside with a handwritten number written in red ink and again in black ink: PMH-1. An additional adhesive sticker on the underside has, handwritten in ink: X143. Handwritten in pencil on the underside: M.H. PEAHL.
Historical NoteThis mug celebrated both the New Deal and the return of legal beer after passage of the Beer-Wine Revenue Act in 1933. It is on display in the BEER RETURNS! exhibit in the Museum’s NEW DEAL gallery.
