Orange and white text across the top above and below the main images reads: Working Mothers / Your Schools Can Help. U.S. Government Printing Office 1943-O-524499. Extended School Services, U.S. Office of Education, U.S. Federal Security Association.
Historical NoteWorking women struggled to find suitable day care for their young children. During the war, the federal government provided grants for childcare services in communities with defense factories. These funds helped support over 3000 childcare centers. Yet demand far exceeded supply. Despite postwar efforts to retain a federal role in childcare (including backing from Eleanor Roosevelt) the government ended its funding for day care in 1946.
