Physical DescriptionA poster featuring a color photographic image of a young woman (Margie) lying on the floor, dressed in a white and peach blouse and dark blue fitted pants. Her head is propped up on her left arm, while she is seen writing a letter with her right hand. In the lower left quadrant of the poster is a simulated handwritten letter page from Margie about saving money. Along the bottom of the poster is a list of five check marked ways to save money in the U.S. Army: NATIONAL SERVICE LIFE INSURANCE / WAR BONDS / SOLDIERS' DEPOSITS / CLASS E ALLOTMENTS OF PAY / PERSONAL TRANSFER ACCOUNT. Additional small text in the bottom margin reads: Margie Poster SP No. 12 / U. S. Government Printing Office : 1944-O-635756. The poster also includes distribution information.
Historical NoteModel Margie Stewart (1919-2012) appeared in a popular series of U.S. Army posters that encouraged soldiers to buy war bonds and save money for their postwar lives. She was often depicted writing letters to a boyfriend in the service. Stewart was a wartime celebrity and appeared alongside Hollywood stars in war bond tours.
