Physical DescriptionA Saint-Gaudens $20 double eagle gold coin.
OBVERSE: At the center, within a circle of forty-six small stars, is an image of Lady Liberty. She is shown standing with her left foot resting on a rock. In her right hand she holds a torch, and in her left hand an olive branch. Behind her are the rays of the sun and the U.S. Capitol. The date MCMVII, with the initials ASG (Augustus Saint-Gaudens) below, is to the right of the image.
REVERSE: At the center is an eagle in flight, backed by the rays of the rising sun. Text above the eagle reads: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / TWENTY DOLLARS.
EDGE: Text along the edge of the coin reads: E PLURIBUS UNUM.
Historical NoteWilliam D. Sohier of Boston, Massachusetts sent this coin to President Franklin Roosevelt in December 1933.
