Physical DescriptionA red, white, blue, and black text-based poster for the Office of Civilian Defense (OCD). The wording reads: ALLIES / for a big job / OCD / Cooperate with your / Local Defense Council. The letters "OCD" are very large and inside them are blue-tone photographic images of crowds of people. The illustrator's facsimile signature is in the lower right corner of the poster: EMILY NEWMAN.The poster was printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office, poster no. 1942-O-473121.
Historical NoteIn 1942, this poster, designed by Emily Newman of Red Bank, Jersey, won first place in a national competition sponsored by the U.S. Office of Civilian Defense (OCD). At the time, Newman was an art student at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Produced in various sizes, the poster was distributed throughout the country as part of the war effort.
