Physical DescriptionA poster featuring a reproduction of a black and white photograph showing uniformed Naval officers and enlisted men on the deck of a ship on open water. The two officers are both using sextants while the sailors are taking notes. Above and below the image is black text that reads: SHOOTING THE SUN / Determining the ship's exact position and charting her course is the duty of the ship's navigator. Scene aboard a modern man o' war.

Issued by the U.S. Navy Recruiting Bureau, poster no. NRB—20578—8-10-37—6500. The number "386" is in the lower right corner.

Stamped twice in black ink on the poster (in the upper left and lower right corners) is an address: U. S. NAVY RECRUITING STATION / POST OFFICE BUILDING / POUGHKEEPSIE, N. Y.
