Physical DescriptionA green, black, and white World War II U.S. conservation poster featuring the cartoon character of bumbling U.S. Army soldier, Joe Dope. In the illustration, an anxious, sweating Joe is being glared down upon by two injured U.S. Army airmen in tattered uniforms. Text in the upper portion of the illustration states: “These pilots will 'gently' explain / To Joe Dope what occurs in a plane / When a poor little jay / Lets the oil leak away / So the gun blows the backplate in twain!” Below the text is a circular inset with the illustration of an anti-aircraft autocannon and the message: "Important! Oil should be put in 37 MM. Cannon with Recuperator at 5° angle." The artist’s facsimile signature is along the bottom of the main illustration : “W.O. Will EiSNER ORDNANCE.”
