Physical DescriptionA small World War II service flag. The handmade flag has three blue appliqué stars, running vertically, on a white satin background bordered with red satin. Inserted through a sleeve sewn at the top of the flag is a gold-painted wooden dowel to which is tied a thin red rope (for hanging) with a small tassel on either end.
Historical NoteDuring World War II, “service flags” like this one were displayed in many American homes. A blue star indicated a family member was serving in the military.
