Physical DescriptionAn oil on board (cardboard) painting of an unidentified frigate sailing ahead of a storm. It depicts an angled view of a gunned, three-masted sailing ship, some sails unfurled, in rough open waters and against a sky of dark clouds. Other sailing ships are seen in the background. The artist's barely legible signature and date are in the lower right, possibly that of George Mounsey Wheatley Atkinson.

On the reverse side of the artwork board is a rough oil study of a number of sailings ships of various sizes, and what appears to be a small steam ship.

The painting is framed in 1 5/8" gold-painted wood frame. Adhered to the reverse side of the frame is small white sticker with a typed number: C-12-8.
