Physical DescriptionAn original watercolor sketch of military guards at the U.S. Treasury. The sketch depicts a room (presumably in the basement of the Treasury building) with a vaulted ceiling, block walls, a large open window, and ductwork. Four cots are arranged in the room and on each one a soldier in partial uniform is relaxing or sleeping. A uniform shirt, a helmet, and a rifle are on or near the windowsill. The artwork sheet is signed by the artist in the lower right: Mitchell Jamieson

On the reverse of the sheet is what appears to be a completed - and unrelated - landscape watercolor painting of fields and a pond backed by mountains. The landscape scene has been crossed out in pencil, and a pencil notation added regarding the image on the front: No 7 - / sleeping quarters no. 1.

The sketch is unmatted.
Historical NoteThis watercolor sketch is one in a series of nine studies (MO 1991.2.1-9) depicting guard duty at the U.S. Treasury. The studies, done by artist Mitchell Jamieson, were commissioned by U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr.
