Fastened to the locket's chain loop is a small mottled metal horseshoe charm. The locket and the horseshoe charm are attached to a gold chain. Inside the locket are two small, unidentified oval photographs (stuck together face to face), as well as several short pieces of dark blond hair that partially jut out from the closed locket.
Historical NoteEleanor Roosevelt wore this gold locket and chain during the early years of her marriage. It bears teeth marks from her young children. The locket's inscription, "E.F./1903," commemorates the Roosevelts’ engagement. The source of the hair in the locket is unknown. The locket is on display in the FAMILY LIFE exhibit in the Museum’s FOUNDATIONS OF A PUBLIC LIFE gallery.
