Physical DescriptionA World War II U.S. conservation poster. The color poster depicts Joe Dope, a bumbling U.S. Army soldier, in an exaggerated seductive pose while two other soldiers laugh uproariously in the background. Over his Army uniform, Joe is shown wearing mess kit components as a makeshift brassiere and a machine gun ammunition belt as a feather boa. Text below the image states: “Joe Dope thinks it funny to play / ‘Lovely Lola, The Charmer' this way / But the gun-jamming kinks / That he puts in the links / Of the belt help a Jap get away!"
The poster also includes several supporting cartoon images: A close-up of the ammunition belt around Joe’s backside showing visible kinks; a military gunner with an angry expression as his gun jams with a “CLICK”; and a Japanese pilot thumbing his nose as he escapes an American military plane from which a string of oaths is issuing followed by the angry exclamation, “THAT JOE DOPE!!!” The artist’s facsimile signature is in the lower portion of the poster : “W.O. Will EiSNER ORDNANCE.”
