Physical DescriptionA cancelled Romanian 1930/1932 purple 1 leu King Carol II postage stamp (Scott 371) from the personal collection of Franklin Roosevelt. The stamp is adhered to the center of a card with printed and handwritten information in black ink that reads: Franklin D. Roosevelt Collection / The above ROMANIA 1930/32 1l bearing the / auctioneer's authentication of origin is guaranteed to be / from the stamp collection of the late Franklin D. Roosevelt / London. W.1. / David Field Ltd. A red ink stamped message below the postage stamp reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUCTIONED FEB., APRIL, 1946 BY H. R. HARMER INC., N.Y. The number "1446" is written in pencil in the upper right corner, and the numbers "127" and "33" in the lower right corner.
The reverse is blank except for the number "2/6" written in pencil in the upper right corner.
Historical NoteFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him. The reverse is blank except for the number "2/6" written in pencil in the upper right corner.
After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
