Physical DescriptionA strip of three connected and cancelled Barbadian 1925/1935 red 1d. Seal of the Colony postage stamps (Scott 167) from the personal collection of Franklin Roosevelt. The stamp were adhered (but are now loose) to the center of a card with printed and handwritten information in black ink that reads: Franklin D. Roosevelt Collection / The above BARBADOS 1925/35 strip 3 x 1d. bearing the / auctioneer's authentication of origin is guaranteed to be / from the stamp collection of the late Franklin D. Roosevelt / London. W.1. / David Field Ltd. A red ink stamped message below the postage stamp reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUCTIONED FEB., APRIL, 1946 BY H. R. HARMER INC., N.Y. The number "207" is written in pencil in the upper right corner, and the numbers "118" and "17" in the lower right corner.
The reverse is blank except for the number "8/6" written in pencil in the upper right corner.
Historical NoteFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him. The reverse is blank except for the number "8/6" written in pencil in the upper right corner.
After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including these stamps, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
