Physical DescriptionA small World War II service flag. The handmade flag has four blue stars and the words "FOR / FREEDOM" in blue on a white satin background bordered with red felt. A gold-colored fringe is attached to the bottom of the flag. Inserted through a sleeve sewn at the top of the flag is a gold-painted wooden dowel to which is tied a thin yellow rope (for hanging) with a tassel on either end.
Historical NoteDuring World War II, “service flags” like this one were displayed in many American homes. A blue star indicated a family member was serving in the military.Additional Details
