Physical DescriptionA World War II U.S. conservation poster titled “AVOID FIRES!” The white, black, and orange poster features a graphic illustration of an open box of matches with some of the matches strewn outside the box. Flames arise from three of the matches which have alighted. Accompanying the illustration is a list of five ways to practice fire safely:
→ Be careful with matches, cigarettes, cigars, etc.
→ Be sure they are out before you throw them away
→ Use safety matches or keep matches in metal boxes
→ Keep them out of reach of small children
→ Don't smoke in bed.
Additional small text along the bottom of the poster reads: “NATIONAL HOUSING AGENCY / FEDERAL PUBLIC HOUSING AUTHORITY / U.S. GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE : 1944—O-610518 / SAFETY POSTER No. 4."
