Physical DescriptionA gray halftone poster featuring a modified photograph of a sculpture consisting of a uniformed U.S. Army soldier with a bald eagle and patriotic shield behind him. Clutched in the soldier's right hand are BONDS FOR VICTORY, and in his left hand he is holding miniature caricature images of Hideki Tojo and Adolf Hitler. Gray text, on a black background, at the bottom of the poster reads: BUY WAR BONDS. The sculpture is by Jack Lambert. Additional small text in the bottom margin reads: U. S. Government Printing Office : 1942-O-460025 DSS-427.
Historical NoteA gifted sculptor, Jack Lambert created some of his cartoons by molding a figure in clay, photographing it, and having an engraver produce a halftone reproduction. Lambert’s sculpted figure made this poster a distinctive contribution to the Treasury Department’s war bond campaign.
