Physical DescriptionAn oil painting of the destroyer, USS DYER, shown in the harbor of Ponta Delgada in the Azores, July 1918. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right corner: C·E· Ruttan '19. It is framed in a 4 7/8"w elaborate gilt wood frame.

An old, typed paper label from the reverse of the painting has been removed and placed in the Accession File. It reads: "U.S.S. DYER, Flagship of / Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt, / in Harbor Ponta Del Gada, / Azores, July, 1918 / by / C. E. Ruttan"


Historical NoteThe USS DYER carried Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin Roosevelt to Europe for an inspection trip in 1918. Shortly after that trip, FDR commissioned this painting by Charles E. Ruttan (1884-1939). It depicts Roosevelt’s arrival in the harbor of Ponta Delgada, Azores, in July 1918. It is on display in FDR'S PRIVATE STUDY in the Permanent Exhibit.

Custodial History NoteLent to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 4, 1942. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
