Physical DescriptionA 1944 Franklin Roosevelt campaign poster. The white poster is titled along the top in red text that reads: The Rights we Fight for. Below are two blocks of black text. The upper block is titled: THE BILL OF RIGHTS, December 15, 1791. The lower block of text has a black and white photographic image of FDR seated with a document in front of him, and is titled: MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES / ON THE STATE OF THE UNION, January 11, 1944. Text printed along the bottom of the poster reads: NATIONAL POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE CIO. A New York union bug is in the lower left corner.
Historical NoteDemocrats circulated a wide variety of campaign material, including many produced by labor unions. The political action committee (PAC) of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) was especially active in the campaign. The Message From the President of the United States on the State of the Union, January 11, 1944, is commonly referred to as the Second Bill of Rights Speech.
