Physical DescriptionA model of a Portuguese caravel ship made of gold filigree. The three-masted, elaborately decorated sailing ship has a small hull and sails unfurled with red and white crosses on the sails. The model is fixed to a matching gold filigree stand.
Historical NoteThis model was presented to President Roosevelt in October 1941 by Mrs. and Miss Santos Mendonca of Lisbon, Portugal, through the courtesy of Mr. Thomas J. Davies of Butte, Montana. They presented their gift as a token of their admiration for the President and as a symbol of a quick victory in World War II.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on November 7, 1941. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
