Physical DescriptionA sterling silver Campobello Golf Club trophy. The slender, elongated cup rests in a stand comprised of three crossed golf clubs ending in a circular base with a golf ball on a tee perched at the center. Engraved text on the front of the cup reads: Campobello Golf Club / 1902 / President's Cup / Presented by / Travis Cochran. Engraved text on the reverse reads: Won by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Maker's marks on the underside of the base (G, device [turtle?], J) indicate the trophy was made by Bailey Banks & Biddle. Additional information stamped into the underside of the base reads: STERLING / 150.
Historical NoteAs a youth, FDR participated in a variety of sports, golf being one of his favorites. He was an excellent golfer and won a number of trophies, including this 1902 Campobello trophy.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 6, 1942. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
