Physical DescriptionA color head and shoulders portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The portrait is made entirely from pieces of almost 2,500 German inflation stamps in 60 different denominations, ranging from one mark to one billion marks. The portrait is signed and copyrighted in ink by the artist in the lower right: GLENN / GOLTON / ©.

The portrait is matted, glazed, and framed in a 1 5/8" medium-tone wood frame.



Historical NoteGlen Golton of Wichita, Kansas created this stamp portrait as a presidential birthday gift for FDR, who was known to be a passionate stamp collector. The prices of the stamps reflect German hyperinflation during the 1920s. Wichita stamp collector Gustave Hamel provided the stamps to Golton and the two men jointly presented this portrait to FDR in January 1937.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941-1942. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
