Physical DescriptionA small, multi-colored handled pitcher in the form of the bust of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He is shown wearing a gray suit jacket, a white shirt, and a red and white striped tie. A white banner near the bottom has the dates: 1932 - 36 - 40. FDR's gray hat forms a removable stopper/lid. On the underside of the pitcher is the maker's mark and information: BONE CHINA / ROYAL WORCESTER / MADE IN ENGLAND.
Historical NoteThe New York office of the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company presented this pitcher - and one of Winston Churchill (MO 1942.203.4) - to FDR in December 1941. Franklin Roosevelt loomed large in American popular culture. Elected to four terms as America’s president, he became a familiar presence on the radio and in newspapers, magazines, and newsreels. Inevitably, his well-known likeness appeared on products such as this pitcher. It is on display in the ROOSEVELT IN POP CULTURE exhibit in the Museum’s NEW DEAL gallery.
