Physical DescriptionA fragment of metal from the USS ARIZONA (BB39). The fragment consists of a small, square concaved section of severely rusted metal with a ¾” diameter hole near one edge. The silver color visible at the edging indicates where the piece was removed from a larger section.

The fragment is accompanied by a USS ARIZONA Wreckage Certificate made out to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.
Historical NoteHalf of the deaths resulting from Japan's December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor occurred aboard the USS ARIZONA. The giant battleship sank in less than nine minutes after a 1,760 pound armor piercing shell slammed through her deck, igniting her forward ammunition magazine. The attack claimed the lives of 1,177 crew members. This fragment from the ARIZONA's superstructure was presented to the Roosevelt Library by the United States Navy in 2005. It is on display in the Museum's WORLD WAR II gallery.
