Physical DescriptionA scale model of the French battleship, RICHELIEU. The model is made of light brown stained wood. On the deck are two armed turrets, guns, boats, two planes at the stern, and metal chains. The model is fixed to a wooden base with a plaque on on the starboard side inscribed: RICHELIEU / FVRENTIBVS EMINET AVSTRIS. A circular medal on the base near the bow has a raised image of a Cardinal Richelieu with the text, ARMAND DU PLESSIS CARDINAL DE RICHELIEU, with the maker's name Georges Guiraud, on the left. On the reverse of the medal is an image of the ship and the text: LA FRANCE DOIT AVOIR UNE FLOTTE DE COMBAT / QUI PUISSE PARTOUT DEFENDRE L'HONNEUR / DU PAVILLON NATIONAL.
Historical NoteThis model was made by Warrant Machinist Le Vergoz in September 1942 for the Captain of the RICHELIEU, Marcel Deramond. It was presented to President Roosevelt by Captain Deramond, through Vice Admiral Raymond A. Fenard, on March 19, 1943.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 8, 1943. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
