Text reads: TO COMMEMORATE THE DEATH OF OUR LATE PRESIDENT, / Franklin Delano Roosevelt / All Places of Business In Pennington Gap / WILL BE CLOSED FOR ONE HOUR, BEGINNING AT 3:00 O'CLOCK, C.W.T., IN THE AFTERNOON OF / April 14th, 1945 / THAT BEING THE HOUR SET FOR THE LATE PRESIDENT'S FUNERAL IN WASHINGTON." The text goes on to describe a proclamation by E. E. Parsons, Mayor, and Earl Cranston Laningham, Grand Master of Masons in Virginia, that one hour of mourning shall take place in tribute to the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Historical NoteUpon arrival in Washington on April 14, 1945, FDR’s casket was transferred to a horse-drawn caisson and taken to the White House. Over 500,000 mourners lined Pennsylvania Avenue as it passed on its way. The casket was placed in the East Room. After a simple funeral service the casket was returned to Union Station and placed on a train to Hyde Park, NY. This closing notice for Pennington Gap, Virginia is one example of the notices issued as stores and businesses throughout the nation closed or organized silent tributes in observance of FDR’s funeral service.
