Physical DescriptionA scale model of the Japanese aircraft carrier, HIJMS RYUJO. The gray-painted wood and metal ship has a long, flat upper deck with light gray stripes and a large red circle at the bow. The model is fixed to a natural wood base to which is attached a paper label with the message: H.I.J.M.S. RYUJO / Launched Feb. 4, 1931 / Sunk August 24, 1942 by aircraft from / the U.S.S. Saratoga / U.S. Navy Master Model constructed by Mr. David Pattee / from drawings prepared by the Identification / and Characteristics Section of the Division of Naval Intelligence.
Historical NoteThe RYUJO was launched on February 4, 1931 and was sunk on August 24, 1942 by aircraft from the USS SARATOGA. This instructional model was presented to FDR on June 3, 1943 by Admiral Wilson Brown (then serving as President Roosevelt’s naval aide).Additional Details
Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 28, 1943. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
