Physical DescriptionA silver footed bowl with applied cast and chased silver elements. The bowl has been polished and lacquered. Inscribed on the underside: Presented to the Honble / John W. Davis / by the / American Merchants / of Canton / as a token of their esteem / Canton, May 16, 1850. Maker's marks on the underside consist of a lion passant, date "L" (which represents 1866-67), "CU," a leopard's head, and a sovereign's head.
Historical NoteThis commemorative bowl is part of a set (see MO 1943.204.11 for the accompanying tray) that was presented to President Roosevelt on January 21, 1943 by Mrs. James A. Wright, the great-granddaughter of John W. Davis. It is on display in FDR'S PRIVATE STUDY in the Permanent Exhibit.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 12, 1943. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
