Physical DescriptionA charcoal sketch of Count Michael Karolyi done from life. Done on buff paper, the head and shoulders portrait shows Karolyi, turned to the proper left in an almost full profile, wearing a dark suit jacket, a white shirt, and a dark tie. Karolyi’s charcoal signature is directly below the portrait: M. Karolyi. The artist's stamped signature is in the lower right quadrant of the artwork page: S.J. Woolf. Written in pencil in the lower left corner: Sketched from life by S. J. Woolf. Stamped in purple ink in lower right quadrant is “MAR 29 1925 / 6592” followed by notes written in pencil: 6 15/16 x 8 9/16 / 3 ½ are Bkg [?] / 6592.
Written in pencil on the reverse of the artwork page: P-450.

This portrait of Karolyi by Samuel Johnson Woolf accompanied an article by Nicholas Roosevelt titled, "COUNT KAROLYI BEGINS HIS MEMOIRS; 'Fighting the World' His Own Record of Wartime Activities”. The article, along with a reproduction of the portrait, appeared in the March 29, 1925 edition of the New York Times Magazine.
