Physical DescriptionA recognition model of the battleship, USS IOWA. The wooden ship is painted gray and has a single mast at the center. The model is fixed to a light blue painted wood base on the underside of which is stamped: IOWA. Rising from one side of the base is an inscribed metal plaque: U.S.S. IOWA – F.D.R. CHESAPEAKE BAY / TO ORAN AND RETURN FROM DAKAR / NOV. – DEC. 1943.
Historical NoteThis is one of the recognition/teaching models produced for the U.S. Navy during World War II by the Comet Metal Products Co., Inc. of Richmond Hill, New York. Models like this one were used to teach ship recognition to naval personnel. It was designed to slide into a portable storage box that would also have contained other similar models.
