Physical DescriptionA sterling silver ashtray inscribed: 1916 / Martin J. Kennedy / TO / Franklin D. Roosevelt / 1941. The inscription is encircled by twenty five stars. The maker's mark is on the reverse: BLACK, STARR & GORHAM STERLING / 8751.
Historical NoteThis sterling silver ashtray was given to FDR by Martin John Kennedy (1892-1955), a U.S. congressman from New York City from 1930 to 1945. It is on display in FDR'S PRIVATE STUDY in the Permanent Exhibit.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
