Physical DescriptionA model of a 78 foot Patrol Torpedo (PT) boat built to exact scale (1/2" = 1 ft). The wooden boat has a green and brown painted hull. The model is mounted on a small wooden base affixed within a plastic, metal, and wood case. A brass plaque attached to the port side of the model's base is inscribed: 78 FT. HIGGINS MOTOR / TORPEDO BOAT.
Historical NoteThis is an accurate replica, even to the framing, construction, and interior arrangements, of a Patrol Torpedo (PT) boat. These boats were manufactured in large numbers by Higgins Industries of Louisiana. This model was presented to President Roosevelt by Andrew Jackson Higgins, founder and owner of Higgins Industries, on June 1, 1944.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 25, 1943. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
